Before you hold
Who actually owes me £1? The issuer does, and only if you can redeem with it. Most people can't redeem directly; they sell on an exchange instead.
What backs the coin? Cash and short-dated government debt, held apart from the issuer's own money. Check the latest attestation date on each profile.
What if the issuer fails? Holders aren't covered by the FSCS. Under the 2027 regime, backing assets must be held on trust for holders, so recovery should be faster.
Is an EU-regulated coin safe for UK users? It's supervised, but not by the FCA, and you have no access to the Financial Ombudsman if something goes wrong.
